Christian Studies - Overview

Overview

Christian studies programs focus on the development of the Christian faith. Students learn about the life of Jesus Christ and the early history of Christianity. They study scriptures and texts. They learn the doctrines and practices of various types of Christian faith communities.

You might think that the only way to truly study Christianity is to become a minister or theologian. Perhaps you're undecided about the ministry, or perhaps you want to fashion your own career based on a merging of faith and academics. Christian Studies could a good choice for you.

In general, Christian studies focuses on early Christianity and how it has changed and developed since then. You'll spend a considerable amount of time studying the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Scriptures. You'll also study Christian literature and philosophy. This means that you'll read different works by different scholars, including both ancient texts and modern ones.

You can also study different branches of Christianity. Often, the school you attend will determine this. For example, studying the history of the Evangelical movement is common at Evangelical colleges. However, no matter where you go, you'll study the different movements within Christianity when you study the history of the faith.

Some schools offer different specializations within the major. You may focus on religious education, Biblical studies, or even mission work. Other schools don't offer specializations, and you can choose your direction after you finish your bachelor's.

About 20 four-year schools offer bachelor's degrees in Christian Studies. Graduate study in this area is rare. It is common for students to focus on ministry or theology during their graduate studies.
